Big Brother 17 – Week 2 Power Rankings

After potentially the most intense first week in the history of US Big Brother, it is time to update the Power Rankings for the remaining fifteen houseguests.

The Power Rankings for the rest of the season will be based on 6 criteria.

  • Likability
  • Game Play / Alliances
  • Under the Radar Potential
  • Mental Competition
  • Physical Competition
  • The ability to not be annoying

 

The houseguests will be ranked 1-15 for each of the categories (1 being the best, 15 being the worst.) The houseguest with the lowest score will have the best power ranking.

Liz has landed in last place in this week’s power rankings mainly because of the twin twist. If the houseguests catch on to her being a twin, she will be a HUGE target, and may be evicted before Julia even gets to play on her own. 5 weeks seems like a remarkably long time for two people to pretend to be the same person. I know it was done in season 5 with Natalie and Adria, but that was 11 years ago, and reality contestants were not as aware of such twists. If Liz could have played the game on her own, her ability to fly under the radar would be exceptional, but look for all eyes to be on her and her sister in the next couple weeks.

Da’Vonne promised in preseason interviews that she was there to play the game, and was she not kidding. After forming potentially the worst alliance in recent history with Audrey and Shelli, they became two of her biggest targets within days. Da’Vonne (and I) correctly predicted that her inability to not blow up on her fellow houseguests would be her downfall, and after only 2 weeks, she has found herself in some boiling hot water. If she can somehow survive Thursday’s eviction, it will not be long before she finds herself right back on the block the next time Clay, Shelli, or any of their buddies win HoH. And next time, she will be flat out back doored.

Much like her one time ally, Audrey has come out swinging, and things could not have turned out much worse for her. She is beyond lucky that she has the support of Clay, because he is in control of one side of the house, and without him, she would likely have been going home this week. How amazing would it have been though, to see Audrey and Da’Vonne forced to work together in the BoB to try and save themselves. Seeing the two of them running around in the same oversized sweatpants would have been the moment of the season.

The only reason Audrey is ranked so high in the Game Play / Alliances category is because even though they don’t trust a word she says, she is tight with Clay and Shelli, and they are the king and queen of the house. Audrey will be considered a target every week, but should be able to last a few more weeks because the house will consider her an “easy week” in future weeks, and won’t want to “waste” their HoH on getting rid of her.

Jackie is playing the game much better than I thought she would. I thought that her tie with Jeff, coupled with her loud/abrasive personality that we saw on The Amazing Race, would put a huge target on her back. Jackie, however, has kept her cool, laid low, and separated herself as much as possible from Jeff. I predict that Jackie will be nominated many times, but will go very far in the game. Does she have a chance of winning it all? No. Not a shot in hell. Jace has a better shot at winning the game than Jackie does.

Meg was my preseason favorite, and while I still like her, I am a bit disappointed with her so far. She is just kind of “there.” I know that her strategy was to lay low, and not be annoying, but she is doing too good of a job with that, and is coming off as being incredibly boring. I want to see the girl that was in the preseason interview with Jeff play the game, not somebody that is trying super hard to not be as annoying as they really are. Like Jackie, I think that Meg will find herself on the block many times as a pawn, and she should be able to survive each of the votes unless, for some crazy reason, the house decides that they need to get rid of her. But, if she does not make some big game moves, as she promised in her preseason interviews, she will not have any chance of winning the game. Unless she is sitting next to Jackie, of course.

 

10. Austin

The best thing that could have happened to Austin is Jace being evicted in week 1. Now that Jace is gone, Austin will be much less annoying and will find more stable allies. Also, now that his bro is gone, he will be able to focus more on the game, and less on his bromance. He has been doing a great job at going under the radar, and could do quite well if he aligns with the right side of the house and downplays his physical abilities. Like Meg though, he has been a bit of a disappointment as far as entertainment value is concerned. But, I suppose that flying under the radar is a much better strategy than being entertaining, so good on him.

Jason winning the first HoH may not have been the best thing for his game. It threw him directly into the spotlight, and forced him to show his cards from the get-go. As long as he is in the house he will likely have half the house coming after him, and he doesn’t seem to be worried about it, which is quite admirable. If he loses his closest ally, Da’Vonne this week, he is in some big trouble. But, if she can somehow manage to stay, the two of them could wreck havoc on the house in the coming weeks. Either way, Jason has been entertaining, and proven himself to be a strong player, which I did not see coming.

James has been one of the most surprising players to me so far this season. I am very impressed by the way he was not scared to stab Jace right in the front. This guy has got some balls, and does not seem to be intimidated by anyone. With that being said, every time he is HoH he is going to want to make big moves rather than just take the easy road. This is admirable, but it will make his target bigger and bigger each week. He is a good player, but will play too hard, and will not make many friends in the process. He has a very long road ahead of him if he is going to win the game; especially if the Clay/Shelli side of the house has the power.

Steve has some work to do if he wants to go much further in the game. He needs to form some tight alliances, not just friendships. His best bet right now would be to form a tight alliance with Vanessa, Austin, John and Becky, then form a side alliance with Clay and Shelli. He would have almost all of his bases covered, with the exception of Jason/James, which he would still have the numbers to stay in most scenarios in which he found himself on the block.

As of now, I do not think he is anyone’s main target, but on the other hand, he is also not anyone’s main ally either, and that is less than ideal for Steve.

Jeff has been playing a surprisingly good game recently. I feel as though he has formed some tight bonds, and some close alliances with the powers that be. He has separated himself from his Amazing Race partner, Jackie, and he has been actually playing the game, rather than just being a waste of space in the house, like she has become. I think Jeff could do very well in the game, but he has to win an HoH soon so he can gain the trust of some of the houseguests that may be teetering on whether or not they can fully trust him.

John is one of the most bizarre houseguests that has ever played the game, but I love him. He is such a space shot that I think it is going to work out in his favor. Shelli and Clay have already used him to not only go on the block as a pawn, but to also throw the BoB challenge so Da’Vonne would remain on the block. That is someone that you will do anything in your power to keep in the house. If John can form another side alliance, and stay firm with his alliance with Clay and Shelli, this guy could be paying off his medical school loans by the end of the summer.

Vanessa is playing a terrific game so far. She is not anyone’s target, she has found a few close allies, and she is responsible for the Audrey/Da’Vonne collapse that made them both huge targets. If Vanessa can stay emotionally stable, she can get to the end with little effort. However, it will be important for her to do poorly in challenges, and not become a mental challenge threat. She should be prepared to be a pawn a few times before reaching the jury, but as long as she keeps her cool, she should be able to survive the block for quite a while. Her alliance with Austin could play a huge role in what happens the next few weeks, and if they are co-HoH’s they will be forced to choose a side of the house, which will either kill their game, or catapult them both to the end. The key is going to be to keep their alliance under wraps, so they will not be targeted together.

I think Becky is sitting very pretty right now. She is not on anyone’s hit list, and does not have any super close allies, with the possible exception of Jackie, which is basically the same thing as not having any close allies. She can win challenges, and is extremely likable. Her biggest issue may not be getting to the end of the game, it will likely be winning the game. At this point she could sail to the end of the game, but she would have a nearly impossible task of getting the jury to vote for her to win. Her best bet would be to approach Clay and Shelli and ask to be in an alliance with them (and Jackie and Jeff.) This way she could hopefully get to the end game with the four of them, and be the swing vote, which would secure her a spot in the final 3. If she turns on Clay/Shelli and ends up in the final with Jeff and Jackie, she would be one HoH win away from a million dollars, and a unanimous vote against Jackie in the final 2.

Whatever Becky decides to do, she needs to be sure that Jackie is right by her side, as she may be her only chance of winning.

Shelli has become the queen of the house. And not just because she is the current HoH, but more importantly because her and Clay have control of the majority of the house. They are aligned with most of the house guests and anyone that goes after Shelli right now, will have Clay (and Audrey) coming after them with a vengeance. After just 2 weeks Shelli has shown she is a physical competitor, and a great game player. She is likable, entertaining, and not afraid to make big moves. She could easily beat any girl in the house right now in a final 2 vote, and as of now, can beat any of the guys as well.

Of all the houseguests, I am most surprised and impressed by Clay. I thought he was simply going to be the “eye-candy” for the ladies of the house. I also thought he was going to

be clueless as to how to play the game, make alliances, and make big moves, and I could not have been any more wrong.

Sure, Clay is going to be a huge target moving forward, and I foresee him having to win multiple POV’s in order to stay in the game, but I feel as though he has made enough alliances to help him survive until at least jury. At that point he may need to solidify a few more alliances if he wants to get to the end game. It may sound crazy, but his best bet may be for Shelli to get evicted in early jury, so he will not be seen as a couple, and help reduce the size of the target on his back.

If he keeps tight with Audrey and Jeff/Jackie, and maybe makes some sort of alliance with Austin/Vanessa, Clay could have this game in the palm of his hand.

Predicting the Cast of Survivor: Second Chances (Women)

For the thirty-first season of Survivor, CBS has decided to let the public vote for their favorite previous castaways that they think deserve a second chance at the game. CBS took the liberty of narrowing the field to 32 castaways, 16 men and 16 women who have only played the game one time, and have been deemed “worthy” of a second chance at a million dollars. While the pool of potential castaways has some noticeable omissions, (more on that later) at least there is a wide range of castaways eligible. Unlike many “All-Star” Reality TV seasons whose cast is heavy on contestants from recent seasons, there is a strong likelihood that Survivor: Second Chances will include castaways that haven’t been seen on our screens since 2000-2001, which is a lifetime by Reality TV standards.

The following are the sixteen women, ranked in order of least to most likely to return, competing for your votes to play the game one more time.

16. Mikayla Wingle, Season 23: Survivor South Pacific

It is easy to understand why CBS thinks that Mikayla deserves a second chance. She was placed on a tribe with a less-than-stable Hantz, who is the reason why she was voted off pre-jury in season 23. What is difficult to understand, however, is how the vast majority of the general public will remember who she is. Unless she somehow gets the support from her one-time boss, Hugh Hefner, Mikayla will be watching season 31 from her living room.

 

15. Stephanie Valencia, Survivor 22: Redemption Island

Stephanie was known for two things during her stint on season 22; being Russell Hantz’s biggest supporter, which ultimately managed to land her in 14th place, and being the female villain of the season. She succeeded at the latter, and was disliked by her tribe, as well as the majority of viewers. While being known as a Survivor villain is generally a lock for getting you on another season, Stephanie is up against two other female villains (see #’s 2 and 3) that would make her look like Little Red Riding Hood compared to them. Therefore, she will not make the cut.

 

14. Natalie Tenerelli, Survivor 22: Redemption Island

At 19 years old, Natalie Tenerelli is the youngest female to ever have played Survivor, and the youngest player to ever make the final 3. Unfortunately for Natalie, she was so far in Boston Rob’s shadow, that you could barely see her. She defines what it means to ride coattails to the end of the game. Even the jury of her peers didn’t remember her, as she received zero votes to win. She is well liked sweet, and beautiful, but completely forgettable; which is detrimental when you need the public’s vote.

 

13. Sabrina Thompson, Survivor 24: One World

Sabrina played a near flawless game her first time around. The only thing she did wrong is allow herself to go to the final 3 with Kim Spradlin, who is one of the greatest players the game has ever seen. The question is, does the public feel as though we will get anything new from Sabrina, should she be invited back. We saw her game, and it was great, but do we need to see it again? Doubtful.

Monica Padilla was part of one of the biggest tribal collapses in the history of Survivor. Her tribe went into the merge with a 8-4 advantage over the other tribe. They were so disastrous that they ended up finishing 12th-6th, and 4th place. Monica ended up in 6th place, but fought hard until the end, and never gave up. Not many people are remembered from her season, because it was the season of Russell Hantz, but Monica is a surprising but solid choice by CBS. Unfortunately, for her, she will be splitting votes with the other 4 young, pretty brunettes, and she may not gain enough support to return for season 31.

 

11. Peih-Gee Law, Survivor 15: China

Peih-Gee Law became a breakout star in Survivor: China back in season 15. She was outspoken, and confrontational, which was welcomed entertainment in an otherwise boring season. Peih-Gee became an underdog that many people rooted for, and finished the season in a respectful 5th place.

Bottom Line:

If CBS has a significant amount of pull in who gets casted, then expect to see Peih-Gee make the final cut. If, however, the vote is weighed heavier by the public vote, Peih-Gee will likely not receive the public support. The combination of a lackluster, non-popular season, coupled with the fact that it aired eight years ago, may be more strikes than Peih-Gee can overcome.

 

Predicted 10 Females for Cast of Survivor 31: Second Chances

Kelley Wentworth was voted out last season, in large part, because of her father with whom she has had quite a tumultuous relationship. Kelley could have been a contender last season, but the Blood vs. Water twist shortened her time, and landed her a pre-jury boot.

Kelley has two things going for her with this vote:

1) She was just on last season and fresh in the minds of even the casual Survivor viewer.

2) She is the only young blonde girl vying for the sexy girl in a bikini spot. As ridiculous as that sounds, it is likely all of her brunette competitors will be splitting votes with each other, (i.e. Mikayla, Stephanie, Monica, Natalie, Ciera) and Kelley will find herself getting all the votes from those that prefer blondes.

The idea of T-Bird getting a second chance, is almost too exciting to put into words. Way back in season 3: Africa, she was a great strategic player, and was not given the credit she deserves. Survivor: Africa, while nowhere near as popular as its two predecessors, was still quite a phenomenon, and many members of those casts are still fondly remembered today. Hopefully enough long-time fans can remember how great she played the game the first time around, and will vote for her to return.

 

8. Tasha Fox, Survivor 28: Cagayan

It was nearly impossible to not root for Tasha Fox on last spring’s Survivor: Cagayan. She was part of “The Brains” tribe, which ended up making more awful decisions than the Beauty and Brawns tribes combined. She was a fierce competitor, winning three individual immunity challenges in a row, which a female has not accomplished since season 7.

Tasha is likable, intelligent, competitive, strong, and a huge fan of the game. Having had her season air just last year, there is a good chance that Tasha will gain enough support to give her another shot at the title of Sole Survivor.

 

7. Carolyn Rivera, Survivor 30: Worlds Apart

Being one of only two woman in her fifties that made the top 32, Carolyn Rivera may have an edge on her fifty-something competitor, Teresa Cooper; Carolyn is currently on Survivor: Worlds Apart. This means that Carolyn is at the peak of her popularity, and has plenty of Twitter followers and Facebook fans. Teresa was on Survivor in 2001, WAY before Twitter, Facebook and other social media.

The one caveat with Carolyn, however, is that she is one of two contestants in the top 32 that may actually be ineligible to participate next season. Since this is a “Second Chances” season, if Carolyn happens to win Worlds Apart, she will be disqualified from the poll, and if she finished in the top ten vote getters, the eleventh place female will take her spot on Second Chances. 

Bottom Line:

It is likely she will be voted in, as she is a great game player. There is, however, pretty much a 50/50 chance of her winning the game at this point, so we may not be seeing her play again just yet.

The timing of this vote could not have come at a better time for Shirin. She was voted off the current season just two weeks ago, and she has been the center of a lot of the Survivor buzz this season, particularly the past few weeks. If nothing else, she is controversial, and most importantly, memorable. Love her or hate her, she will be remembered.

This bodes very well for Oskooi, as she is still very much a part of the current season, which will surely garner her a magnitude of votes.

 

5. Ciera Eastin, Survivor 27: Blood Vs. Water

Ciera Eastin was an out of nowhere, breakout star in Survivor: Blood Vs. Water. She famously voted off her own mother at Tribal Council, and chose to pick rocks at the final 6, rather than vote with people she no longer wanted to be aligned with. CBS would not be foolish enough to not include Ciera on Second Chances, and the public would be just as foolish to not vote for her every day until the polls close.

A whole new generation is potentially about to experience the loud mouth, over the top, vegetarian from Long Island, NY, and there is at least one person out there that is willing to create hundreds of fake email address every day, just to vote her back on.

If Kimmi Kappenberg is on next season, and we don’t see a challenge where the reward is chickens, there will be hell to pay.

 

3. Abi-Maria Gomes, Survivor 25: Philippines

Perhaps the biggest female villain in the history of the show, Abi-Maria Gomes will play this game again, that is all but guaranteed. She was so hated by her tribemates, and the American public, that she received the nickname “the demon.”

With that being said, CBS LOVES villains, and I am sure they have been chomping at the bit to get Abi-Maria back on the island, to see if she is still as evil as she was back in season 25.

She may not get the public vote, but will will certainly have CBS’s vote, and that may be all that matters.

 

2. Kass McQuillen, Survivor 28: Cagayan

If anyone can play a better villain than Abi-Maria, it is this woman, Kass. She is the epitome of a Survivor villain, and that is why she will be back for her second chance. She is unlikable and brutally mean, but is entertaining and buzz-worthy. Not only will she return, but she could be one of the main factors in why this season is happening in the first place. #ChaosKass will be shoved in your face, and the hash tag will be shoved down your throat for as long as CBS can keep their evil queen around.  Which hopefully, won’t be long.

Prayers have been answered, and dreams are coming true. Kelly Wiglesworth, the original “rat”, is playing the game again after 15 years. It is widely rumored that Wiglesworth has never seen an episode of Survivor, including her own original season. She is just too cool to be bothered.

Kelly “River Guide” Wiglesworth is playing Survivor, 30 seasons after she helped make it a phenomenon, and Survivor fans couldn’t be more excited. She is a Survivor legend, and it is time to see if she has what it takes to finally win it all.

5 Tips for Getting on a Reality TV Show

With the new season of Big Brother right around the corner, CBS is on the trail to find a new batch of housemates to inhabit their pad for the summer. This Thursday, Twin River Casino, in Lincoln, RI, is holding open casting calls for hopefuls attempting to move in to the Big Brother house for the seventeenth season.

 

Ryan’s Countdowns has met with former houseguest, Michelle Costa from season ten, to find out the best tips for becoming one of the latest houseguests to vie for the $500,000 prize.

5 Tips for becoming the next reality star.

  1. Be Memorable – No matter what happens in your interview, be memorable. “One of the worst things you can do, is be forgettable”, says Costa. “Castings Directors are looking for people that viewers will either love or hate, and being forgettable is the single worst thing that you can do at an open casting call or when taping a casting video.”
  1. Don’t censor yourself – Producers are looking for people that will be open and honest about their lives. “Viewers at home want to be able to relate to the houseguests they are watching all summer. Casting directors have a ton of experience, and know when people are telling the truth”, says Costa. “If you censor yourself during the casting process, you are bound to be outted along the way.”
  1. Personality is a must – Do not be afraid to show your personality. “Viewers at home will want to watch a reality show with contestants that have a hearty amount of personality”, says Costa. Make sure your personality stands out from all your competition, and make sure you stand out as someone that is truly entertaining.
  1. Do not be afraid of what others think – If you worry about what the casting directors, producers, or fellow applicants are thinking of you, there is no way you will be able to handle the pressure of what viewers think of you. “People are going to judge you, and viewers will point out your biggest faults. That is what comes with the territory of being on reality TV. If you can’t handle worrying about what the producers think about you, there is little doubt you will be able to handle what the at home viewers will think about you” says Costa.
  1. Be Yourself – “The casting process is extensive and evasive” says Costa. “If you are not honest in the beginning, the casting directors or producers will discover all of your lies no matter how small they are. They are trained at discovering who is being honest, and they will catch any of your fibs, no matter how insignificant of inconsequential you think they are.”

Bottom line: Be yourself; if they are looking for someone like you, they will want you to continue along in the casting process, and if they are not looking for someone like you, do not give up hope; just because you may not be right for this season, does not mean they will not find a spot for you the following season.
