Pop Star Angers Locals as She Moves Into Town

A little over two years ago, mega pop star, Taylor Swift purchased a mansion in Westerly, Rhode Island for nearly eighteen million dollars. At the time, Westerly residents were thrilled that their new neighbor was going to be one of the biggest celebrities of the century, and welcomed her with open arms.

The home Taylor purchased, located in the Watch Hill village of Westerly, sits on a popular public beach that Westerly residents have been enjoying for generations. Swift’s new residence was previously known as the Holiday House, or simply, the Harkness House by locals. Named after the previous owner, Rebekah Harkness, heir of Standard Oil, the house has been cherished by the citizens of Westerly since it was built in 1931.

After less than 6 months of being a Westerly resident, however, rumors among Westerly residents began swirling that their beloved new neighbor, Swift, was planning on changing the beloved landscape of their cherished Watch Hill beach.

Swift ordered construction of a seal wall around her estate, which prevents locals from fishing, swimming, and surfing in the place that has been their favorite area for such activities.

No one was more upset than Watch Hill resident Shane Daly. Daly, along with many other residents, was outraged that a celebrity could move in to town, and change the landscape that has been a part of his town for generations.

“The majority of my summer days were spent in that area of the beach that is no longer assessable to us now that Ms. Swift has built her sea wall”, says Daly. “Since I was a little boy, I have been visiting that beach to enjoy quality time with family and friends. My father taught me to swim there, I learned to surf there, and I taught my boy how to fish there.”

Daly is certainly not alone with his anger towards the 25-year-old pop star. In addition to the beach area being inaccessible to the public now, neighbors in the Watch Hill area are irate about the sea wall, and accompanying fence being an eye sore.

“The entire landscape has changed, and will never be the same, my father would roll over in his grave if he could see this new addition to his backyard”, says a neighbor of Swift, who preferred to not be mentioned by name in this article.

When asked about whether or not Swift has the required permits to build the sea wall, Laura Dwyer, spokesperson from RI Coastal Resources Management Control said, “Swift did not need a permit to build the wall. Everything is on level, and they haven’t done anything wrong.”

Despite the sea wall, Daly admits that Swift is not all bad for his hometown.

“She seems to be a wonderful young lady, and has been perfectly gracious with us locals. She brings in tourists who drive in for the day just to catch a glimpse of her house, and she is always shopping in the area’s stores, and supporting local businesses. All us residents want are answers as to what the exact regulations are for beachfront owners. We have heard many times that Swift has followed all necessary measures to be allowed to build the wall, but we just do not have any proof that she did not receive any special treatment because she is a celebrity. We j

ust want to all have the same rights, and the same guidelines, celebrity or not.”

If you are in the Westerly, RI area, and want to check out the Swift mansion, or head to the public beach to check out the sea wall for yourself, head to 16 Bluff Avenue, Watch Hill, RI.

Classic Car Show Rolls into Misquamicut Beach

Classic Car Show from Ryan Jacobson on Vimeo.

Misquamicut Beach’s weekly Classic Car Cruise Nights is underway, another indication that summer is in full effect in Westerly, Rhode Island. The sounds of the fifties and sixties blast through the air, blending with the crashing of ocean waves. Despite the cooler temps and cloudy conditions, there was a decent turnout for the first show of the summer.

Continuing the yearly tradition, Atlantic Beach Park’s east lot becomes a classic car lover’s dream every Thursday night starting this week, and continuing throughout the summer.

“Of all the classic car shows I attend, the one in Misquamicut is by far my favorite,” says Sean Doyle of Cumberland, RI.

Doyle, along with many others, made the hour trip to Misquamicut, just to attend opening night of the car show.

“I try to get down at least once a month from May to September,” says Doyle, who has been enjoying the car show for the past three years after he attended his first show in July of 2012, on a recommendation from a friend.

The event, presented by the Misquamicut Beach Association and hosted by DJ Mike English from 102.3 The Wolf, includes the opportunities to win prizes, as well as a 50/50 raffle, with proceeds going to the Westerly Warm Shelter.

“The classic car cruise nights brings in car enthusiasts from near and far, and is one of the most popular weekly events we have throughout the summer,” says Lou Trefes, owner of the East Lot. He also added, “As the weather conditions improve, more and more people make the trek to the beach to attend the show.”

The Classic Car Cruise Nights is a great opportunity for car enthusiasts in the New England area to socialize and share their passion for classic cars, while enjoying the beautiful views of Misquamicut Beach.

Misquamicut Fest Rings in the Unofficial Start of Summer

The parking lots have finally been cleared of the remains of one of the most horrific winters in recent memory. Winter is finally over, and summer is rapidly approaching. Nothing says summer is right around the corner more than the Misquamicut Spring Fest, held at Misquamicut State Beach in Westerly, RI.

This is not like any other “summer kick off” festival around the country. This festival is located on the beautiful shore of the “Ocean State”; one of the most popular summer destinations in New England.

You can smell the salty ocean, and hear the pounding of the waves as you line up for your favorite rides and refreshments. Even though it is not yet warm enough to lay on the beach or go into the ocean, you still can get the feeling of summer, because your senses are familiarizing themselves with the sounds and smells of summers past.

This festival is the unofficial kick off to summer, so, for a town that is known for their beaches and summer entertainment, this is the most exciting time of the year”, says Matthew Morin, one of the head directors of the festival.”

From the rides, and games, to the shopping tents and live entertainment, the Misquamicut Spring Festival has something for everyone. Couples on dates were competing in a rock-climbing race against each other. Newlyweds were enjoying a fine glass of wine, while tasting the local chowder. Couples with children were enjoying their day with rides and carnival games. And elderly couples, among many others, were relaxing and listening to the live music from local great, Jason Cardinal.

There truly is something for everyone at the Misquamicut Fests. However, do not worry if you could not attend this weekend’s festivities. This weekend marks the unofficial opening of Misquamicut Beach, so many of the opportunities at the fest, can be found somewhere along the shore of Misquamicut, along with a slew of other forms of entertainment that can keep you occupied for an entire season.
